Kynren Composer Scales Alexandra Palace Before Hearing His Music Take Flight
Published June 24, 2026
One of the composers behind the spectacular new productions at Kynren – The Storied Lands found himself reaching new heights recently when he climbed to the roof of Alexandra Palace before returning to earth to hear extracts of his own music performed live by the BBC Concert Orchestra.
Just hours before taking his seat for BBC Radio 3’s Friday Night is Music Night concert, composer Samuel Pegg took part in the Summit Ally Pally Rooftop Experience, scaling the iconic North London landmark high above the capital.
The guided climb takes visitors across the roof of the famous Victorian entertainment venue, revealing the stories behind Alexandra Palace while offering panoramic views stretching across London.
For Sam, who is one of the composers behind the original soundtrack for The Lost Feather at Kynren – The Storied Lands, it proved an unforgettable prelude to an equally memorable evening inside the theatre below.
The Friday Night is Music Night performance brought together the BBC Concert Orchestra, conductor Fiona Monbet and acclaimed saxophonist Emma Rawicz for a celebration inspired by birds and flight.
Among the audience was Sam himself, listening as extracts of his own music were performed live by the orchestra for the first time.
Alongside fellow composer Martin Batchelar, Sam has created the original score for The Lost Feather, one of the five major experiences opening when Kynren – The Storied Lands launches on 18th July.
The Lost Feather is a free-flying bird show that explores humanity’s connection with birds and nature, and features a message of conservation at its core.
The spectacular production will feature more than 100 free flying birds and explores humanity’s relationship with the natural world through live performance, music and storytelling.
“Standing high above London on the roof of Alexandra Palace and then sitting inside hearing the BBC Concert Orchestra perform music written for birds and flight felt wonderfully appropriate,” said Sam.
“The Summit experience was incredible. You gain a completely different perspective of the city and of this remarkable building, and there was something quite special about making that journey before hearing the music come to life.
“One of the things I love most about music is its ability to transport people and create a sense of wonder. Whether that’s high above London or inside an eagle’s nest arena in County Durham, the aim is always to create moments that people remember.”
The Lost Feather is one of five live-action shows and immersive experiences launching as part of Kynren – The Storied Lands this summer.
Kynren – The Storied Lands opens on 18th July in Bishop Auckland and will feature five spectacular live shows and immersive experiences inspired by history, myth and legend.
