Kynren - An Epic Tale of England

Kynren’s Viking Couple Shortlisted for Durham Tourism Superstar Award

Published June 23, 2026

Two of the most familiar faces behind Kynren – An Epic Tale of England have been recognised for their passion, dedication and commitment to championing County Durham after being shortlisted for the Durham Tourism Superstar 2026 award.

Paul Marsey and Bethaney Shears, who first joined Kynren as volunteers when the spectacular show launched in 2016, have been nominated for the prestigious title in recognition of the countless hours they devote to promoting both Kynren and the wider region.

Part of Kynren’s cast and crew of 1,000 volunteers, affectionately known as Archers, the pair have become enthusiastic ambassadors for County Durham, helping bring the area’s history and heritage to life at events, exhibitions and festivals across the North East.

Whether appearing in full Viking costume at tourism events, supporting new volunteers backstage or performing in front of audiences of up to 8,000 people during Kynren – An Epic Tale of England, they have become widely known for their infectious enthusiasm and pride in the region.

Bethaney is one of Kynren’s Dance Team Leaders, helping to organise and support fellow volunteers during rehearsals and performances. Her roles in the show have seen her take centre stage with swords, fire and even dance sequences performed on the lake.

Meanwhile, Paul performs in a number of scenes, including portraying the Viking king Harald Hardrada in one of the production’s major battle sequences.

This year both have also trained as blacksmiths for Kynren’s popular Viking Settlement and undertaken Makaton training to help make visitor experiences even more inclusive.

Their Kynren journey has recently come full circle after both secured permanent roles within the organisation, with Paul joining as an IT Technician and Bethaney taking up the position of Finance Assistant. Despite this, both continue to volunteer with the evening show and support outreach activities throughout the year.

“Paul and Bethaney embody everything that makes Kynren so special,” said Anna Warnecke, CEO of Kynren.

“Their passion, generosity and commitment to others are remarkable and they are wonderful ambassadors not only for Kynren, but for County Durham and the North East.

“From supporting fellow volunteers and delighting audiences to representing us at events across the region, they constantly go above and beyond. Their story also demonstrates the power of volunteering to build confidence, develop new skills and create opportunities.

“We are incredibly proud to see them recognised with this nomination and they thoroughly deserve to be celebrated.”

Paul and Bethaney said: “We’ve made lifelong friends through Kynren and are incredibly proud to play a small part in sharing the story of County Durham with visitors from across the country.

“Being nominated for Durham Tourism Superstar is a huge honour. Kynren has given us so much over the years and we’re proud to be able to give something back.”

The Durham Tourism Superstar competition celebrates the people who go above and beyond to create unforgettable experiences for visitors and help showcase County Durham to the world.
